FEMA Allows New Flood Insurance Policies During Government Shutdown

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said on Friday that it would allow new flood insurance policy sales during the partial government shutdown, a reversal of previous course.

“As of this evening, all [National Flood Insurance Program] insurers have been directed to resume normal operations immediately and advised that the program will be considered operational since December 21, 2018 without interruption,” they said in a release.

House Majority Whipe Steve Scalise and Senators Bill Cassidy and Marco Rubio all called on FEMA to reverse its original policy. They originally said that a lapse in appropriations meant that FEMA couldn’t pay private property and casualty insurers without government backing.
